Overview
Mamra almonds do not look like supermarket almonds. They are smaller, boat-shaped and deeply wrinkled, with a darker skin and a noticeably richer, sweeter flavour. That character comes from slow growth in high, cold Zagros orchards, which also gives Mamra its famously high natural oil content.
In Iran, Mamra is eaten the traditional way: a handful soaked in water overnight, peeled in the morning and eaten before breakfast. They are also wonderful raw as a snack, blended into almond milk or ground for sweets. Raw, unpasteurised and sorted by hand.

Growing region
High-altitude almond orchards
The high Zagros plateau around Shahrekord has some of Iran’s coldest winters — exactly what almond trees need to set fruit well. Slow-growing mountain almonds here develop the rich oil content that defines Mamra-type kernels.
Nutrition
Notable: Exceptionally rich in vitamin E (about 25 mg per 100 g) and magnesium. Typical values for almond kernels per 100 g (USDA FoodData Central). Actual values vary by crop and roast.
Soaking softens the kernel, loosens the skin and gives a milder, creamier texture. It is a long-standing morning habit in Iran and South Asia.
Same species (Prunus dulcis), different type. Mamra kernels are smaller, more concave and higher in oil, with a deeper flavour than common commercial varieties.
Mamra is a traditional type grown in Iran and Afghanistan. The kernels are smaller and more concave than common commercial almonds, with a darker skin, higher natural oil content and a richer, sweeter flavour. Yields are low, which is why Mamra costs more.
